Summer’s just around the corner so it’s time to head to the beach to soak up that summer sun! What’s the best way to enjoy the beach? Bring your drone for a spin! Here are our top tips for safe and enjoyable flight at the beach this summer.
Flying at the Beach: Top Tips
Know Your Drone
Before you and your drone take off at the beach, it's important to consider the rules and regulations in place to protect you, others and your drone! Here are some key rules to consider:
- You can’t fly in populated areas, which means you should avoid peak periods to fly safely at the beach.
- Your drone cannot be flown over people, no matter how high, as this poses a safety risk in the rare case of technological failure.
- Always maintain visual line of sight of your drone when flying.
You can learn more about safe flight and what is required to fly in populated areas by visiting CASA’s Know Your Drone website.
Avoid Crowds
To keep in line with CASA restrictions, it's important to avoid crowds and populated parts of the coast when flying at the beach. It’s best to find quiet coves and less densely crowded beaches in order to fully focus on flying rather than avoiding beach-goers.
We suggest planning your trip for earlier or later in the day when beaches are far less populated with families soaking in the sun. If you’re early enough, you might even be able to catch golden hour for some fantastic shots.
Plan Your Flight Before Takeoff
Flying over the water when you’re at the beach can be risky business if you don’t plan ahead. We suggest planning your rough flight route before you take off so that you know exactly what you want to capture and how to capture it before take off. This way you can avoid any nasty obstacles as you fly with ease.
If your drone supports Waypoint, it's always a good idea to make use of this feature when flying in public areas like the beach. Simply map out your flight path and let the drone take care of the rest.
Use Smart RTH
The last thing you want when flying is to spend time flying, framing and capturing the perfect shot just for your drone to not make it back to you in time. We’ve heard some horror stories about pilots ignoring RTH alerts and losing their drone over the water when their batteries run out of juice.
Make sure that happens to you by following your drone’s Smart RTH notifications so that you can ensure that your drone returns to your location before its battery dies. Simply hold the RTH button when it shows up on your screen and your drone will intelligently navigate a course home.

Stay Sun Safe
When you’re out flying it’s important to remember to be sun safe under the bright Australian sun. Make sure to stay hydrated with plenty of fluids, protect your skin with sunscreen and a hat and take regular breaks from flying.
Pack the Right Accessories
Having the right accessories can make your flight experience a whole lot easier. Accessories like landing pads, lanyards and more are designed to help you keep your drone safe and make your overall experience smoother.

Pack Your Gear in a Safety Case
There’s nothing worse after a trip to the beach than having sand end up literally everywhere… in your bag, in your shoes and worst of all, in your gear. Keep your drone and accessories safe and sound at the beach with a hard-shelled safety case!
Designed to store your drone kit when not in use, safety cases are an ideal option for keeping your gear safe at the beach. With waterproof and dustproof options available, you can rest assured nasty sand and sediment won’t be making an appearance in your gear.
