DJI has been studying the potential of drones outside aerial photography and video production for quite some time. In 2017, the manufacturer released a first of its kind study on the life-saving activities of drones. The study found that drones have saved 59 people within the last 10 months surveyed. These numbers suggest that drones may be saving at least one life per week.
In agriculture, farmers have been experimenting with drones for a while, attaching sirens to Phantom models to help herd livestock and scaring away birds that feed on crops. Mining and construction companies use drones to survey operations and collect data faster than human workers walking around potentially dangerous sites.
The company’s shift in direction did not happen overnight. But with the Mavic 2 Enterprise Dual model, the company further crosses over onto a wide variety of verticals like public safety, emergency response, and agriculture.
Public Safety
The Mavic 2 Enterprise Dual helps bring public safety into the future by empowering firefighters, disaster response teams, search-and-rescue workers, and law enforcement units. “By attaching a thermal imaging camera to our drones, search and rescue teams are able to identify people that are lost when hiking in the wild or in difficult terrain in remote areas,” says Kevin On, director of communications at DJI.
This is especially critical for Australian public safety workers. With extremely high and low temperatures, sprawling forests, great arid deserts, soaring mountains, and shores that can be unforgiving--rescue workers in Australia face the unique challenge of keeping its citizens safe from every natural risk in the world.
Mavic 2 Enterprise Dual brings the ability to quickly sweep areas that would otherwise be treacherous to human workers like cliffs, thick forests, huge swathes of ocean or desert, and communities stricken by calamities like earthquakes, floods, or fires. The potential of drones in the field has already been tested in real life situations.
Last year, a drone saved two teenagers off the coast of Lennox Head. The two were swept out to sea by a riptide, and were saved when the drone dropped a floatation device. The drone reached the swimmers in 70 seconds, where a rescue team would have taken 6 minutes, according to Northern New South Wales parliamentary secretary Ben Franklin.
In situations when a second can be the only thing that stands between life and death, speed is critical. The Mavic 2 Enterprise Dual comes blazing in at max speeds of 72km/h.
Industry
The Mavic 2 Enterprise Dual helps businesses gain a 20,000 foot view of operations. Maintenance workers can safely monitor if a piece of equipment is overheating. It can be used for checking utilities like power lines, a job traditionally done by maintenance crews riding helicopters. A quick sweep of the drone can show inspectors where there are damaged structures, leaks, or issues that will take human workers hours to suss out with handheld sensors.
Agriculture
Drones have already been buzzing around farmlands. DJI’s Agras MG-1 is the first drone made for agricultural uses like applying pesticides, fertilizers, and herbicides. Now with the Mavic 2 Enterprise Dual, farmers can improve efficiency even further. The drone can help increase yield by giving farmers increased visuals on field conditions, even from miles away. Like a digital sheepdog, the drone can keep an eye on the herd, and quickly let farmers know when and where animals need assistance.
The M2E Dual: A specialized class of its own
With the Mavic 2 Enterprise Dual, drones fulfill their life-saving capacity with three powerful payloads geared towards rescue operations: the speaker, beacon, and spotlight. These are what distinguish the model from the other Mavic 2, Phantom, and Spark drones.
The speakers enable communication between drone pilots and ground team members. The spotlight helps pilot see in low-light conditions, and can guide lost persons to safety and to rescuers. It has a max flight time of anywhere from 22 to 31 minutes at top speeds, depending on which auxiliary device is mounted onto the drone and in use. At just under a kilogram, the Mavic 2 Enterprise Dual is ultra-portable, making it easy for rescue workers to bring the drone high or low. A self-heating battery means the drone can function reliably in temperatures as low as -10 Celsius.
But what truly sets the drone apart from the earlier Mavic 2 Enterprise are the FLIR Lepton Thermal Microcamera and an ultra powerful 4K Sensor camera for capturing visible light. These allow pilots to navigate around darkness and places where visibility is near zero due to fog or smoke. The drone’s Isotherm feature lets you assign colors to specific temperatures, increasing visibility for missing persons or equipment that may be malfunctioning.
The Mavic 2 Enterprise Dual has a transmission range of over 8km, which allows workers on the ground to have an unparalleled view over wide landscapes and areas. A 2x optical and 3x digital zoom helps pilots get close to dangerous situations from a safe distance, and allow the response team to plan for unseen environmental factors. It also helps improve employee safety when conducting maintenance on massive equipment. “You don’t need to have a surveyor walking about on site if you have machinery around,” said Jack Widdowson, a project engineer at local construction firm Abax Contracting.
Companies don’t have to worry about sensitive data falling into the wrong hands if the drone falls. Password protection systems keep all of the data on the Enterprise Dual’s 24GB onboard memory storage safe and restricted to authorized personnel.
