New Pilot Experience - 19th of September
Recap!
On Thursday night, 6-8PM, DJI store hosted their EIGHTH New Pilot Experience across all stores. We had another strong turnout this week with plenty of first time drone owners.
The two hour course took pilots, with varying levels of experience, through some of the basics to the more intermediate skills. Some of the topics that were covered included pre/post flight checklists, photography/videography settings and CASA laws and regulations. Whilst flying the drone may be the easy for most, learning how to effectively use the return to home function can be difficult.
The return to home (RTH) function brings the aircraft back to the last recorded Home Point. There are three types of RTH: Smart RTH, Low Battery RTH and Failsafe RTH. It is recommended that once you turn your drone on, it's best to wait for around 1-2 minutes before taking off as it gives the drone time to connect to the required satellites (varies between drone models, 6-11 is ideal) and it will automatically record it's home point. A tip here is to manual reset the home point before take off just to ensure the accuracy of the home point.
If you have moved beyond your initial home point, lets say on a boat, you can reset the home point based on your controllers location (or the drones current location). This way, the drone won't return to the initial position, but the updated position.
Smart Return To Home is activated via pressing the return to home button on the controller or through the application. You can exit the smart return to home at any point by pressing the X button.
Low Battery Return To Home is automatically triggered when the Intelligent FLight Battery has depleted to a point that the drone believes there is enough battery to return to home safely and any further flying may cause the drone to be unable to return to its home point. A warning will be displayed on the GO 4 application and if no action is taken for 10 seconds, the drone will automatically return to home. You can cancel this by pressing the X but please note that your drone may not reach the home point and the drone will automatically land at 10% remaining.
Failsafe Return To Home occurs when the controller connection to the drone is lost and the drone automatically returns to home via the route it has flown, if the controller connection is established, you will be able to regain control and continue flying.
Therefore, It is very important to set up Return To Home to ensure a safe flight!
Furthermore, the workshop also had many questions asked and answered, boosting everyone's confidence when using the drone. We encourage people to ask as many questions as possible. Each week, we try and add those questions into the course to ensure that it is fresh and relevant! We highly recommend you to sign-up if you haven't already as it is definitely worth it! Feedback from the evening!
"Thanks so much for the excellent intro presentation the guys gave us at the dji store Indooroopilly. It was informative, amusing and fairly comprehensive given the time restrictions and busy environment. Heads up to Harry and his excellent colleague. Having delivered a lot of presentations in my decade at Griffith I know how challenging it can be. Thrilled to see some of the new gimbal tech you also have on offer it will be of great interest to the mobile videography group I belong to on bookface."

Question of the week!
What are Quickshots and how do i use them?
QuickShots are automated video shooting modes that will give you cinema style videos at the touch of a button. These shooting modes include Dronie, Circle, Helix, Rocket, Boomerang, Asteroid, and Dolly Zoom (only available with Mavic 2 Zoom). The Mavic 2 Pro/Zoom records a video according to the selected shooting mode and then automatically generates a 10-second video. The video can then be viewed, edited, or shared to social media from Playback.Dronie: The aircraft flies backward and ascends, with the camera locked on the subject.Circle: The aircraft circles around the subject.Helix: The aircraft ascends and spirals around the subject.Rocket: The aircraft ascends with the camera pointing downward.Boomerang: The aircraft flies around the subject in an oval path, ascending as it flies away fromits starting point and descending as it flies back. The aircraft’s starting point forms one end of theoval’s long axis, while the other end of its long axis is at the opposite side of the subject from thestarting point.Ensure there is sufficient space when using Boomerang: Allow a radius of at least 99 ft (30 m)around the aircraft and allow at least 33 ft (10 m) above the aircraft.Asteroid: The aircraft flies backward and upward, takes several photos, and then flies back to thestarting point. The video generated starts with a panorama of the highest position and then showsthe descent.Ensure there is sufficient space when using Asteroid. Allow at least 132 ft (40 m)behind and 164 ft (50 m) above the aircraft.Dolly Zoom: The Mavic 2 Zoom flies backward and upward. It adjusts the zoom during flight tokeep the selected subject the same while the background changes. When planning to use Dolly Zoom, first select the distance between the aircraft and subject. Besure that there is at least three times that distance available on the rear side of the aircraft so thatthere is sufficient space to fly.To utilise quickshot modes, ensure that the aircraft is in P-mode and that the Intelligent Flight Battery is sufficiently charged. Fly the drone up to your desired height, must be at least 2m off the ground and tap the quickshot mode you are after and follow the prompts. Select the target and tap go to begin the recording and the drone will do its thing. After it's finished, it will return to it's original home point.
