New drone, new controller! The hotly anticipated DJI Air 3 has landed in Australia alongside a brand new drone controller - the DJI RC 2! The follow-up from the hugely popular DJI RC controller, the DJI RC 2 brings new features to the table for piloting success. Let’s compare it to its predecessor and see what’s new!
What is the DJI RC Series?
A broad term that refers to DJI drone remote controllers, the DJI RC Series includes both the DJI RC and new DJI RC 2 - an updated version of the DJI RC. Both of these drone remote controllers are ultra-versatile and represent the mid-tier controller option in the DJI line-up.
Both controllers feature built-in screens and offer more functionality than the DJI RC-N1 and DJI RC-N2 controller options that come stock with most drones. However, pilots seeking an even more advanced piloting experience should opt for the top-of-the-line DJI RC Pro that sports all the bells and whistles professional pilots require.

DJI RC vs DJI RC 2: What’s Different?
Transmission Technology
Arguably the most important difference between the DJI RC 2 and its predecessor is the introduction and implementation of an all-new transmission protocol: DJI O4. DJI RC 2 is the very first DJI remote controller to support the new DJI O4 transmission protocol which enables pilots to fly their drone up to a massive 20KM away with stable video transmission.
In order to support the new O4 transmission technology, DJI RC 2 sports new external hardware - two new antennas that pair with two internal antennas to form a comprehensive 2T4R system. This upgrade system doubles the transmission power of the original RC, delivering the most reliable video transmission ever with a DJI remote controller.
Internal Storage
A handy little feature of the DJI RC 2 is 32 GB of built-in internal storage - an added feature that many pilots were clamouring for. While it may not seem like a lot when you’re working with 4K video files, having a small amount of internal storage can come in handy when your card is out of storage space or you’ve simply forgotten to pack one!
Processing Power
It might not look all that different from the outside, but the DJI RC 2 has definitely received some upgrades under the hood. An improved CPU and GPU ensure excellent graphical performance for enhanced video playback and overall smooth operation.

DJI RC vs DJI RC 2: Which Should I Buy?
Unlike other product comparisons, there isn’t a clear cut ‘better’ option between the DJI RC and RC 2. Your choice of controller will ultimately boil down to the drone you’re flying.
At the time of writing, the DJI RC 2 is exclusively compatible with the DJI Air 3 drone, making it the clear cut choice for Air 3 pilots. If you’re flying a drone that utilises DJI O3 or O3+ transmission, you’ll need to fly with the first-generation DJI RC controller instead. This includes the DJI Mini 3 series and DJI Mavic 3 series, providing a piloting experience that doesn’t compromise despite slightly older tech.
