DJI Osmo Mobile 6 vs DJI OM5: What’s the Difference?
The all-new DJI Osmo Mobile 6 is here, and just like with every other DJI product release, we all want to know what’s new and improved compared to its previous-generation counterpart. Let’s explore and find out!
What is the DJI Osmo Mobile 6?
The latest addition to the DJI Osmo Mobile series, the DJI OM6 is a compact, foldable smartphone stabiliser that attaches magnetically to your smartphone to help you capture super stable video and creatively share your everyday adventures.
The DJI OM6 brings a handful of exciting new features to the table that truly set it apart from any DJI Osmo Mobile series gimbal before it. Let’s take a look and see what’s new.
Quick Launch
Ever wish that your gear would power on instantly so that you don’t miss a moment of spontaneous fun and adventure? We’ve been there too. That’s why we’re so excited about Quick Launch, an all-new DJI OM6 feature that powers on the gimbal the second you unfold it. That’s right, no longer do you have to wait for your OM to power on, simply unfold, attach and go!
Once connected, the DJI Mimo app will also auto-launch with compatible smartphones. After using the OM6’s quick launch feature, you’ll soon wonder how you ever lived without it.
Status Panel
Not sure what mode you’re recording in? Status Panel to the rescue! The Osmo Mobile 6 provides critical information about the status of your OM6 at all times, including battery life and shooting mode. Ready to switch shooting mode? Simply hit the M button to hotswap between operating modes.
ActiveTrack 5.0
Didn’t think ActiveTrack (Follow Me mode) could get any better? Think again! The DJI Osmo Mobile 6 now sports ActiveTrack 5.0, DJI’s most advanced subject-tracking algorithm. ActiveTrack 5.0 is optimised to detect faces and track subjects around the frame, even if they’re temporarily obstructed. It’s so powerful that it’ll even identify and re-track a subject after losing it. It’s also great for tracking your pets as they run around the park.
One change that DJI has made to the OM6 is the introduction of new physical controls to make operating the Osmo mobile easier on the fly. The zoom slider has now been replaced by a side control wheel with 360 degree rotation. This new control wheel makes it easier for you to make fine-tune adjustments to zoom and focus while shooting.
Operating Efficiency
With the introduction of OM6’s new Quick Launch feature, capturing moments is now easier than ever, and leads to greater overall operating efficiency. Quick Launch powers the OM6 on the moment it unfolds whereas the DJI OM5 needs to be manually powered on by pressing and holding the power button before you begin creating.
Colours
One big change that impacts form more than function is the introduction of a new Slate Grey colourway for the DJI OM6. The DJI OM5 was manufactured in two different colours: Athens Grey and Sunset White, whereas the Osmo Mobile 6 is only available in the Slate Grey colourway. A callback to older DJI OM models, this new colour is sleek and designed to fit right in with the rest of your creative toolkit.
Weight + Feel
With the addition of new physical components on the Osmo Mobile 6, it marginally outweighs the DJI OM5 gimbal with a total weight of 309 grams and 292 grams respectively.
Both the DJI OM5 and OM6 are packed with features, but at their core they’re both smartphone stabilisers designed to deliver the greatest stabilisation possible when recording videos on a smartphone.
Compatible Smartphones
As is standard with the DJI Osmo Mobile series, DJI aims to add support and compatibility for as many major smartphones as possible for the DJI OM6. Thus, the new OM6 supports smartphones weighing 170 to 290 grams, just like the DJI OM4. OM4 SE and OM5 before it.
That means that if you’re looking to upgrade from the DJI OM5 to the new Osmo Mobile 6, you can rest assured that your smartphone will still be compatible with the OM6.
Users absolutely loved the introduction of the built-in extension rod introduced with the DJI OM5 and that’s exactly why it's back on the new DJI OM6. With up to 215mm of extending reach, the extension rod acts like a selfie stick, allowing you to capture shots from up high, down low and everywhere in between.
Creative Features
Intelligent Shooting Modes make it easy to create engaging content with an Osmo Mobile gimbal and they’re making their return on the new DJI OM6. All the creative shooting modes you know and love from the DJI OM5 including Timelapse, DynamicZoom and more are all available on the DJI OM6 to power your creativity.
Ok, we’ve taken a look at all the similarities and differences between the two OM models, but which one is the best investment for you and your wallet?
Well, if you’re currently using a DJI Osmo Mobile gimbal that’s older than the DJI OM5 or are looking to invest in your first smartphone stabiliser, you can’t go wrong with the DJI Osmo Mobile 6. The OM6 is the latest and greatest from DJI
Own a previous-generation DJI OM5? That’s great! The OM5 is still one of the best smartphone gimbals available on the market and is still being supported by DJI via updates to the DJI Mimo app. If new features like Quick Launch, ActiveTrack 5.0 and the new status panel have you chomping at the bit for an upgrade, go for it! If not, we’re sure that the OM5 will keep delivering fantastic results for you to share on social media and more.
Ultimately, both the DJI OM5 and DJI Osmo Mobile 6 share the same Australian retail price of $239 AUD and the OM6 only features improvements compared to the DJI OM5. Thus, if you’re seeking your first smartphone gimbal, definitely opt for the new DJI Osmo Mobile 6.
