DJI FPV Unboxing and Overview
First Look: DJI FPV
The DJI FPV is a brand new drone from DJI that offers an immersive cinematic experience like no other. DJI has taken their expertise in image quality, user experience and have mixed the handling and acrobatic capabilities from a hobbyist freestyle drone to create something new and unique.
The resulting product is a platform that is perfect for filming action at high speeds and a drone that is significantly more fun to fly than any other drone.

What is the Video Quality and Transmission like?
When it comes to video quality and transmission, DJI is the market leader and rightfully so. It would be a struggle to find a better drone manufacturer on the market with transmission specifications close to them.
The new OcuSync 3.0 (DJI O3) is a game changer and allows ultra low latency on the goggles. Experience a range of up to 10km with latency as low as 28ms and a bitrate of up to 50 Mbps.
The camera itself has a wide angle view of up to 150 degrees in certain modes, which makes for some very interesting and eye catching videos.
When recording to the SD Card, it unlocks the potential of the camera where it can capture 4K/60 FPS video up to a 120Mbps bitrate. When recording in Full HD, the framerate jumps up to 120 FPS where you can experience 4x slow motion video, giving you slow, smooth cinematic videos. Furthermore, Rocksteady image stabilisation is back from the Osmo Action and smooths out turbulence/jerky flight movements.
What are the flight dynamics and characteristics?
DJI have made flying FPV super easy and have introduced a toned-down mode, N Mode, where it is an GPS-assisted mode that allows easy control and smooth flight.
Whilst this setting may not be for everyone, there is another mode called, S Mode, which increases maximum flight speed to 27 m/s and doubles the ascent and descent rates. This mode is a large step up for many pilots who are used to flying smaller DJI quadcopters.
"Manual" mode will be the way to go for those wanting the full experience. This mode disables most flight assists and hands direct control to the operator, just like a freestyle drone would have. This enables amazing manoeuvrability, but also carries considerable risk. This manual mode can be disabled by default and must be enabled through the goggles menu. There is an additional setting that removes the attitude limiter and will unlock the full potential, meaning you can do manoeuvres such as flips and rolls.
During this mode, we suggest disabling the automatic recentering on the controller (screw located at the back) whilst in full manual mode.
How easy is it to use the DJI FPV?
DJI takes usability to the next level and is a top priority. DJI has taken great care to ensure the freestyle-like experience is also seamless and easy to access for all users. Some of the expected usability (and safety) features include lighting, smart return to home, low battery return to home and both forward/downward obstacle avoidance sensors. These sensors and features make the DJI FPV one of the easiest drones to control and use out of all the FPV drones.
Is there an emergency function on the drone?
Freestyle flight is difficult and intimidating to learn. The controls are very powerful and allow vast freedom of movement however it does open up the pilot to be more prone to crash. Experience is key with freestyle drone flying and with more experience, the likelihood of crashing is significantly less. The risk of a fatal crash is mitigated with the panic button. Once activated, the drone goes into full stabilisation mode to set itself upright and hover in place.
What's the battery light?
With a 20 minute flight time and speeds up to ~97 kph, the DJI FPV drone is no slouch. The low-pitch 5328 propellers are very efficient but aren't going to provide raw power that many enthusiasts are used to. Carrying nearly 800 grams of weight will make the drone side and slide through corners instead of providing the locked-in feel that dedicated racers look for.
Why should I get the DJI FPV?
The barrier of entry to this hobby is generally high for racing/freestyle drones and don't come with any "safety nets". It also requires a bit of reading to understand control systems, radio frequency usage and the different manufacture standards. This simple product allows you to avoid all of that and enjoy the fun of flying whilst capturing incredible photos/videos in the process.
If you are looking for a drone to get cinematic FPV flying, this is the one to get. The high-quality footage along with the excellent features make this drone the complete package.
